Lesson from a Tomato (Not Bob the Tomato)

I used to plant lots of tomatoes and basil. That was before the addition of Leah, the border collie mix and a terror to gardening. Last summer we were sadly tomatoless. This summer Devastatingly Handsome and I decided to try the crazy upside down tomato system.

So, Saturday, we Did It. We took the unreversible step (I am not big on unreversible) of cutting the coco matting in the hanging baskets. We threaded the plants. We hung them. We added lots of compost. And we looked at how completely absurd they are hanging upside down and thought about Acts 17:6 ~ they dragged Jason and some of the brothers before the city authorities, shouting, “These men who have turned the world upside down..." and thought about how it can be a Good Thing to look absurd.

And now, today, less than 48 hours later, look at them.

Already the leaves have turned to face the sun. And the stems are beginning to grow up toward it... just as we are called to. I hope they bear much fruit... just as I hope we bear much fruit (for the point of this post, we will skip the whole fruit/vegetable thing, ok? Paul did not talk about bearing vegetables.)

Ecclesiastes 11:7 ~ Light is sweet, and it is pleasant for the eyes to see the sun. And even pleasanter to keep looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
